Ingredients

  • 3 large yellow onions, cut into thin rings

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup milk, plus more if needed

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper

  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • ½ teaspoon dried basil

  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Directions

  • Whisk the flour, milk, egg, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, spices, salt, basil, and black pepper together in a shallow bowl until smooth. Add more milk if needed.
  • Heat about an inch of vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium-high. Oil should be 375 degrees F.
  • Working in batches, coat the onion rings with the batter and drop into the hot oil. Fry for 4-5 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Transfer to paper towels to drain and repeat until all the onion rings are done.
  • Serve
